Lower Elementary (1st – 3rd)

Lower Elementary emphasizes the interconnectedness of all things and how natural laws bring order to the universe, human societies, and even small communities like our classroom. A bursting interest in language, math, and BIG expressions of intellectual and imaginative work creates an environment that nurtures a lifelong love of learning while encouraging curiosity, wonder, and a sense of responsibility to God, others, and self.

Ages: 6 – 9
Grades: 1st – 3rd

In the Classroom

Lower Elementary has two self-contained classrooms in which each lead teacher is responsible for all subject areas. The two classrooms do some integration, especially with literature circles and cultural subjects. Classes also integrate for PE, Spanish, lunch, and recess.

Lower Elementary curriculum is very student-centered, offering flexibility and multi-age teaching. The curriculum emphasizes academic excellence, covering science, history, geography, geometry, language arts and mathematics. Curriculum specials are also offered in Spanish, Art, and Music. Students attend atrium once a week for 2 hours.

Homework

There is no formal homework in Lower Elementary beyond the expectation to be reading at home nightly and practicing math facts. Periodically there are projects that require home connections and the support of parents.

Field Trips

Lower Elementary tries to go on one field trip in the fall and one field trip in the spring. Field trips are selected that connect to curriculum areas such as trips to an apple orchard, farm, or nature center. Parents are asked to help carpool and are welcome to attend the trips.

Technology

Chromebooks are first introduced in Lower Elementary and utilized primarily for standardized testing. Students learn how to navigate the chromebook as a practical life lesson that will be called upon in subsequent years. Technology is not regularly used in Lower Elementary. Rather, emphasis is on using the hands-on materials, researching through non-fiction books, and prioritizing interactions among peers.
